Welcome to Laura’s 3rd Class’ Update Page.
This page gives you a sneak peek into what we have been up to throughout the year.
We have PE every Tuesday and Thursday.
We go to our school library every Monday and Wednesday.
Have a look at our class contract. We came up with all of the rules ourselves.
Art – Kandinsky
We have been studying Wassily Kandinsky, the Russian painter. Kandinsky painted mainly abstract art. We took his ‘Concentric Circle’ idea and made Kandinsky-inspired trees.
We have been using Headspace Kids to practise mindfulness. It really clears our minds of worries and helps us focus in class.
We have been having great craic with the Stacking Cups. It took a while to get used to them, as they are very challenging. It’s tricky to train your brain to carry out the drills correctly as it requires a lot of focus and dexterity.
We have learned the following drills:
Lots of us have also managed to grasp the cycle which is a combination of 3-6-3, 6-6 and 9. We had some fun tournaments, races and other competitions. Have a look at some of the stuff we’ve gotten up to…
Student Council – Motivational Posters
Our fantastic student council reps Aoife and Ewan attended an important meeting which highlighted the need for posters around the school to build self-esteem. Each person in our class thought of a slogan and illustrated it. Have a look at our amazing motivational posters…
Autism Awareness Day
We had a fantastic day and were very lucky to have Adam Harris in to speak to us about Autism. He was a really interesting speaker and we could have listened to him all day! We wore blue in support of and to celebrate all the children in our school who have Autism. We blew bubbles during yard time and it was great fun.
The School Garden
We absolutely love our new school garden. HUGE thanks to all the parents who have made it an incredibly special place for us to visit. We had a picnic and then mapped out the garden in pairs. It was so interesting discovering all the different herbs and plants that are growing there.
The 3rd classes were chosen to be visited by an Engineer from Eirgrid in association with the SEAI. Graham came and spoke to us about the job of an engineer, the skills used and how engineering is a huge part of the world around us. He spoke to us about renewable energy and different sources of renewable energy. We then got to try out some cool experiments.
We prepped very hard for Multi Cultural Day. We studied about Egypt – past and present – for the whole month of March. It was really interesting and we learned so much. We could be classed as Egyptologists now!
We visited all the classrooms in the morning and lots of parents came to visit after big lunch. Thank you so much to the people who visited, here’s a few photos of the day for the people who couldn’t make it…
We did some fun STEM experiments during Science Week. We also visited Jacqui’s 1st Class’ amazing Science Fair! We completed a tricky science table quiz too.

Write A Book – Judging Time!
We officially sent off our fantastic Write A Books and have received amazing books from another school to read and judge. It’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it!!!!
Write A Book
We have completed our Write A Book projects and have worked very hard on them. They will be sent off to be judged by another school, but we know that no matter what the result is, we are all very happy and proud authors.
Drama: Kaspar Prince of Cats
We have begun reading our class Novel ‘Kaspar Prince of Cats’. We retold the first through chapters through improvisation in small groups. We really are Drama Queens in our class!
Science: Smelly Pots
As we are taking part in Discover Primary Science this year, we will have lots of science experiments to do over the next couple of months. We tested our senses with the ‘Smelly Pots’ experiment.
Chinese New Year
We made some stunning lanterns and painted some fabulous Roosters to celebrate the Year of the Rooster!
PE – Gynmastics
BABUSHKA, BABUSHKA, BABUSHKA!
We hope you enjoyed our play! We put a lot of effort into it and were very proud of our performance.
Homes Around the World:
3rd Class had to construct a home that was inspired from somewhere around the world. We used photos of various homes from various locations as our starting point. We had lots of discussions about the types of homes in Ireland and abroad and their functionality. We then went home and created some magnificent pieces (with just a little help from our parents!)
Have a look…
Our theme this month is ‘Homes’. Check out the amazing ‘Dream Homes’ we created…
Bhí Lá Gaelach ar siúl ar 16ú Samhain. Bhí an-chraic againn! Bhaineamar taitneamh as Ceol, Ealaín agus cluchí trí Ghaeilge.
Maths with 6th Class:
We are very lucky to have four amazing girls from 6th class come to do some fun maths activities with us every second Friday. We even get to use calculators!
We focused on tinting and shading in Art this month, as well as the colour wheel. Have a look at one of our pieces – Primary Monsters!

Mathematicians at work!
We planned interviews for different people in our school community. We focused on appropriate questions and our presentation skills. We were so lucky to have Rose and Helen visit our class to be interviewed about their lives and their roles in our school community.
The game of the week was Snakes and Ladders! We also did some really tricky word problems, and finished off our ‘Addition’ topic.
Heritage for Schools Visit:
Grace Garde from the ‘Heritage for Schools’ scheme came to visit our class. She did a presentation all about bees. It was really interesting. We then went outside for a biodiversity walk and Grace showed us many different plants, trees and weeds and explained how they were an important part of our ecosystem.
Every Thursday teacher Grace will be coming in to our room to do some fun maths station work with us. We do a mix of games, independent work and problem solving. We work to a timer and change stations after 10 minutes. It is great having two teachers in the room! Have a look at what we get up to…
We did a tricky cup challenge to help our group work skills. We had 4 pieces of string, an elastic band and 6 cups. We had to make a tower using the cups but we could not use our hands to touch the cups. It was tricky but we worked really well together.
We did some peer portraits. Have a look at our fantastic work!
‘Maths About Me!’
We have been working on our mapping skills. We have made maps of our classroom and school.
We made family trees that went as far back as our grandparents – and even some of our great-grandparents made an appearance!
