Our 5th and 6th class girls travelled to Bray Emmets on the 6/3 and the 20/3 to participate in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Wicklow Times Shield competition for girls' gaelic football.
Cumann na mBunscol changed how the divisions worked this year, so instead of a cup just at Division 1, there were cups in Division 2, 3 and 4. This was a great way to recognise effort and success at different levels.
On both the days we were really lucky to have a past pupil accompanying us to referee games in the competition. Thea is a fabulous gaelic footballer who has played for the county, won a club title on more than one occasion and played in a Leinster club final. She is a wonderful role model for our current pupils.
One of our teams was competing in the Corbett Cup, Division 3 and our other team participated in the Corn Táiliúra, Roinn 4. Day 1 and 2 were equally important as the scores were accumulating over both to decide who would play in the finals.
Our Division 3 team did well winning all their games on the first day, and Division 4 had a trickier time with a tough round of games.
On Day 2 our Division 4 team played well and made it to the 4th place playoff but were unsuccesful.
On Day 2 our Division 3 team won all but one of their games and made it to the final on points difference! The girls had a tough final but they dug in and showed some magnificent team work. With the score a draw at half time the second half was really important, and in the end they did won by two points! Their opponents Ravenswell were disappointed not to win but both sets of girls were magnificent and the future is bright for LGFA in Wicklow.
Zaara was nominated by the girls for the presentation of the cup from Paraic Corbett and Éamonn Hughes.
The girls returned to a guard of honour from the whole school.
What a wonderful way to inspire the younger generation!
