Artistic Concept

“Human resources are like natural resources; they’re often buried deep. You have to go looking for them, they’re not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves.” (quote on the school website from Ken Robinson).

 We have taken the imagery evoked by this quote as our concept and theme. Greystones Educate Together National School sits on a hill surrounded by natural resources. We would like to explore these resources with the children and teachers and s.n.as.

Our aim is to stimulate a curiosity and heightened awareness of the earth that we stand on. Through this enquiry or quest the children will find new talents, interests and confidence, as well as creating lasting relevant artworks.

Our Theme – Traces.

Traces

A mark, object, or other indication of the existence or passing of something. Oxford Dictionary

Our main focus will be the geology and early history in the area. This will uncover a new understanding of the Greystones area and its connection with the past. Through using art materials, natural materials and age old techniques the children will gain a new interest and understanding of time, weather, erosion, silting, fossils and early man, and see that they too will be leaving traces for the future.

Sub-themes within   traces

We suggest that we choose a suitable topic for each class, choosing materials and processes that are age appropriate.

These are topics we suggest would be of interest for class groups;

 Junior and senior infants – Beach stones and Sealife

First and second classes – Prehistoric forest under the Irish Sea

Third and fourth classes – Fossils

Fifth and sixth classes – Archaeology, with particular relevance to Charlesland, Greystones.
